Long Belated Update

I know its been a while since I updated the old faithful blog. A lot has happened. Brett, Matt and I have moved into a nice new flat that has cheaper rent. Its a beautiful old house with a nice patterned ceiling and a fireplace. I have also started a new job. Yep I finally left the Canterbury Shop and am now working for a career support/youth transition service called the Canterbury Youth Transition Service or CYTS for short. It is based on the Workin It Out model already in place in Southland. For more info check out their website at http://www.wio.co.nz

Part of my job is to provide internal tech support for the computers and phone system we use. The other main part of it is to follow up on school leavers throughout the whole Canterbury Region and see how they are doing with work, study or training since leaving High School.

Even though we are a new service operating in Canterbury we have had such a warm reception which makes the job all the more worthwhile.

I have a ton of photos to post when I have them uploaded. They include pics of our new flat, my job and other bits and pieces.

In other news, this saturday with a bit of luck I will be travelling to Curio Bay for a camping trip with SGNLS* Invercargill. And this saturday also marks One year and Eight months together with Brett.

A lot has been happening this year which I have neglected to tell. Mum and Lucy came down to Invercargill for a couple of days for a short break. I am so glad they did as it gave them a chance to see where I live and for them to meet Brett.

The weather has also gotten worse down this end of the country. Walking to work today I was almost bowled over by some huge winds. And in the midst of the horrible weather, the Tour of Southland started today. Poor cyclists trying to contend with the southern wind.

Anyways, best head off and back to work. More updates coming soon...I promise

Semester Begins

Well yesterday SIT O Week officially started with regular mayhem and chaos. I have also officially started my new course and am finding it extremely enjoyable, but i'm not looking forward to the assessment for Accounting and Finance. It seems like a cold is making its rounds down here, three of my friends, myself and brett have all caught it to some extent. I guess thats the price to pay for living in the deep south :)

Young Labour

With the impending election and the furious campaigning going on, I have decided to take a more active role in Young Labour while living in the Southland Electorate. After reading Dad's article about National's Education Policy it made me get fired up in local politics. Those of you who followed my blog during my sabbatical will realise the opposition I have developed to the US system of annual testing of students throught primary and intermediate years. Schools, Principals and teachers were entirely focused on preparing their kids for the tests each year (from age 7 up!) as they were judged on how their kids did.

USA was ranked 42nd in the International PISA tests while NZ was ranked in the top 5 so why are we planning to copy such a programme?

We have to oppose this at all costs. Weighing the pig does not make it any fatter!

NZ schools already regularly assess student progress to inform further strategies. There is no need to have a centrally imposed and driven programme which has the intention (according to their policy) of comparing students in one school with another.

This crock of shit is a populist strategy for which there is no credible research to support it.

You will have different important policy positions which determine your vote. For me, education is one of the most important issues and National's position on regular testing makes it impossible for me not to let as many people as possible know what they are up to.

The NZ education system is in good health. Young people are more literate and numerate as a group than any before. We do have a longish tail of under achievement which is largely ethnically centred and with programmes such as Te Kotahitanga and Ka Hikitia we are making inroads in this area.

If National are elected and push this policy through I will struggle to remain involved in education to my current level in New Zealand.

My holidays have started and only a few days til I start shooting my 15 Minute Film for BDM-131 (Practical Filming). So far things have been cold and quiet down here, except for the Hercules flight that flew by a few days ago. I've still been job hunting like mad but things are doing well down here. Its only a small update today until I upload my photos to flickr.

Forbidden Broadway Again

So I was asked to post about Forbidden Broadway. Until I get the still captures from the footage I took i will instead post the article from the Southland Times about it.

"The musicals Chicago, Cats and Mammia Mia are all targets of satire in the Invercargill Musical Theatre's latest show.

Forbidden Broadway, which begins tomorrow night, is a comedy spoof of some of the world's best loved musicals.

The show features spoof songs from musicals such as Phantom of the Opera to Annie.

Director Craig Waddell said Forbidden Broadway is the Australasian premiere of the show, which has been on Broadway since the 1980s.

"It's a bit of a piss-take at musicals really ... People will certainly recognise the music, but the lyrics will be different," he said.

The show stars eight of the theatre's more experienced singers, he said.

Held at Repertory House, it was designed to be a smaller, more intimate show than the previous production of Cats.

"We just wanted to try something different." The show will run from tomorrow night until September 13, although there is no performance on Sunday.

Tickets are $25 and available from the Invercargill City Council booking office."

Today I celebrate two significant events: Fathers Day, and Mine and Brett's 6 months together. I am writing this post from the Multimedia Lab at SIT. It turns out I can multi-task because Im writing this post and also working on my script. Well I was the good son this afternoon cos I rang home and wished dad a happy fathers day. This is going to be a real short post today. My mind appears to be having a seizure right now and I can't think of anything intellectual to write without resorting to ranting - which i wont do.

Forbidden Broadway

Tonight is the Australasian Premiere of the Musical "Forbidden Broadway". The reason I am posting this is because my friend Jaz has a lead role and got Brett and I tickets to the Sponsors Gala. The show is a spoof of other musicals such as Rent, Mamma Mia, Fiddler on the Roof etc. I will be taking photos to post on the blog because Flash Photography is encouraged.

I will post my thoughts on the show tomorrow.

New Week

So i got a facebook message from dad telling me to update my blog. Well a new week has started here in the deep south. I must admit I had a pretty guiet weekend. Brett stayed at the Grand and we hung out with a few mates and watched some tv. I love lazy weekends when its quiet.

Anyway so today Brett departs from Invercargill for 3 days to Auckland so he can undergo induction training for ANZ. He is staying at the Waitakere Estate for the duration of the course. I also handed in my 30s commercial for Practical Filming. I would post a youtube link for it, but I don't have the clearance for the actors. So instead I might put it on CD and post it up.

I've also been hearing from Mum and Dad through email and a couple of postcards. The last couple of weeks however have been a bit rough. I've seen the SIT nurse and the SIT counsellor. I think I will be making another appointment with her.

I also offer my sincere apologies for the no update recently. I've been snowed under at Tech and my internet decided to play up. Damn Wireless Router lol. So anyways in Web and Graphic Design we have been doing HTML websites which I am flying through. I guess the only bad thing is the tutor hardly lets me answer questions...unless nobody else can answer. I've also been helping a few of my classmates with HTML code and I helped one of my floormates at the grand with her Poster assignment.
Today, Patrick, the Practical Filming tutor gave us one last chance to drop out of the Practical Filming paper - which there is no chance of me doing - I've dreamed of making films since I was about 6 years old when Dad used to bring home the clunky old VHS Analog Cameras. Since being at SIT i've almost orgasmed (pardon the expression) at the opportunities to use Professional equipment in out productions.

My next big undertaking is to learn about CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for Web Design and also to complete the Pre-Production for our 12-15 short film project.

This week in Business and Legal Studies we are studying the Law of Contract which will help for the end of year assignment where we have to talk about a national event and do budgets, hiring,legal aspects etc. So I decied to do the Motu Challenge seeing as I can contact the organisers and sponsors when necessary.

Well now it seems i'm beginning to rant a wee bit, so I will rant just a bit more.

I have now got a new film obsession. "Rent". Based on the stage show, its got the most amazing music which I intend to buy. Also one of my musical friends landed a role in "Forbidden Broadway", a musical show which pokes the piss at other musicals. So as a lead actress she got Brett and I free tickets to the Final Dress Rehearsal, so I will have to take my camera and post some images on flickr.

Well thats it from me for a couple of days and I will hopefully have more to say and less to rant about :)

Queens Park and Filming

Today Brett and I decided to have a catch up with our mate Laura who used to live here at the Grand. So we made a time to meet, and we took Jaz with us. We spent 4 hours in Queens Park looking at the Bird Aviary and the wild animals. It was an awesome afternoon, I don't think I have laughed as much in the last couple weeks.

Also this morning, my group finished filming for our 30s TV Commerical. From here on out - well til friday is just editing so we can hand it in all ready for marking. I think I might brush up on my Final Cut skills as well. Also on the friday our commercial is due, we also have our poster for Web and Graphic Design due. There is a draft idea posted below of what I might use for my assesment.

I've been looking after myself too, my cold was about to flare up again - which would not have been pleasent - but I managed to keep if from being too dramatic.

I am also in the process of pre-production for a 15 minute film for Practical Filming. I have a script started so I am keeping up with all my work. I also topped up my printer credits so I can print my activity for Business and Legal Studies off too.

New Semester

I have started my new semester here at SIT. It's gonna be real intense for the last half of the year. I have classes like Business and Legal Studies, Media Culture, Practical Filming and Web and Graphic Design.

Aside from the workload, I was also hit with a Viral Flu which took a lot out of me.

Looking at my diary shocks me at the moment with all the assignments I have due. I have a 30s TV Commercial Due in 2 weeks, A poster, A Website, 3000 word essay etc. But the good thing is, I am staying organised and keeping up with the work load.

I got some more exam results as well. I got 55% for my script, which I have to disagree with, but its still a pass and I learnt some valuable skills out of it. I got a D- for my film for the editing side of it, and I know why. When it was edited, all the shots were in order and there was nothing missing. But when I rendered it to CD, heaps of shots got cut out or cut short and I couldnt change it at the time because we had to hand it in. I just have the final exam to do for BDM105 Editing and then I will recieve my marks.

The image posted above this is what I did in the first Web and Graphic Design Lesson. I knew my photoshop skills would come in handy at some point during the course of my degree.

Exams a Coming

Well its been a busy week down here in the deep south. For the last few days we have been getting a wealth of information regarding exams. The first one in fact is next tuesday. And its the most boring subject imaginable...COMMUNICATIONS.

The good thing is though, that the manager of the Grand has converted a room into an absolutely fantastic study area with a long table so you can spread your stuff out and a computer that ties into the SIT network was installed a couple of weeks ago so things are looking up.

The downside of Last Week was one of my best friends (we shared a corridor to ourselves) left the Grand with SIT backing. She wasn't coping with the noise at all hours and during the week. There are times even I feel like losing it like she did. But, i should be strong and know that no matter how bad it is in the Grand, things could get worse.

I'm planning on making a trip to the Bay sometime in the near future, so I can let you all know how i'm going, and what i'm doing.

I write this post from my sickbed more or less. This past week i've been knocked back by a pretty heavy cold. It hasn't been pleasent. I guess its more or less due to the fact that winter (one of nvercargill's 2 seasons) is approaching fast. The good thing is that i'm not the only one affected. Quite a few people at the Grand are falling ill.

On a differen subject, i've started doing something quite alarming...don't panic, its nothing bad...well depends how you take it really. I have only been in the deep south since february, so thats like only 4 months right? Well I have started to roll my "r's" especially in "Nurse", "Burger", "Work".

I apologise that this post lacks substance, but i've been so run down, i'm finding it hard to actually type this post.

Long time no write,

I finally (at long last) remembered my user details for my blog. That made me so super happy so now I am able to fill you in on whats been happening for the past few months.

FEB 08

I finished work early in February and got all my stuff together like packing and booking tickets etc for my departure from Hanaia to the Deep South. I left on a very fresh early morning from Rotorua. Once I landed in Invercargill, I was picked up by Ryan and his mum and taken to the Grand Hall which is to be my home for the year. A week later O Week started and I am pretty sure SIT is the only Uni in the country that has classes run at the same time as O Week. I have made some awesome friends, Jaz, Vinnie, Tasha, Cilla, Amanda, Laura, Matt, Ben and a whole heap more. I feel I am coping quite well living so far from home but...I miss you my family.

March signalled the end of mine and Ryan's relationship. I will not go into details here because they are rather painful to recollect, but for every end there is a new beginning. I have met the most wonderful guy by the name of Brett. Before he even talked to me, he first contacted me on Bebo and we chatted and exchanged cellphone numbers. The day before he officially met me, I was waiting for Communications Studies (A class I take with brett) to start. He walked in and saw me leaning against the wall, He turned bright red and looked at his feet before leaving the foyer for a few minutes. ***SO CUTE***. We eventually got to know eachother and I met his parents who are lovely people. And for a weekend he took me on a Roadtrip to Roxburgh, an integral part of In My Fathers Den (A New Zealand Film). I find it funny that I am able to find film references in just about all I talk about.

April was finally surgery time. I was in Hospital for a week following the actual procedure then I spent a further two weeks in Opotiki before leaving for Invercargill again. I fell a wee bit behind with my assignments but got every single one of them up to date and handed in with a copy of my doctors note.

The Grand is, at the moment, turning into a real unpleasent place to live and study. I will blog about the goings on in the Grand in a later post, I don't want to give you too much to read

I have been so busy these last couple of weeks. My boss has had me doing hellish hours at work again. I just finished doing eight (8) night shifts in the kitchen and on the forecourt. I only had a couple of days off then I started back again doing day day shifts on the forecourt and now another five night shifts in the kitchen. I guess I can't complain too much because the pays pretty good. Got some holiday wages and I have worked almost every stat day, so my pay packets have been fabulous. All the more money to help make ends meet when I leave.

Stay tuned for a little side project of mine that will be posted in the sidebar. Details to come later.

Tertiary Terrors (Well not really)

Well its been an eventful month this december. I was both provisionally accepted and officially accepted into my course at S.I.T. I was also accepted into the Halls.

I was also rung up by Whakatane Trade Education. They may be able to provide some funding assistance with accomodation and stuff.

Also in the later part of November a "friend" of mine by the name of Ryan came up from Invercargill and spent a week here at Hanaia. He met quite a few people. But for those who never got to meet him, a photo will be posted above them.

Christmas was also fairly eventful. I did a 7-3 shift at work, got home and opened my presents. I am so sure my family is trying to tell me something. I got a planner from Grandma and Grandad. A suitcase from my parents. A note book from Tracey. A very nice soft leather wallet, a huge bar of Dark Chocolate my favourite flavour and a game that doesn't play on our computer.

So overall it was a good month. And I depart for the Deeeeeep South on the 11th of Feb

Well yesterday I applied for my Student Loan for next year. It was such a long winded, minde boggling process (haha if you re-arrange boggling it spell blogging). I have also been in touch with the Digital Media Tutor at SIT (Southern Institute of Technology). I feel quite busy. On top of all this I have been studying and sitting my final NCEA L3 external exams. Music is my last one which I sit tomorrow.

The title of this post must sound a little morbid, believe me in some ways its meant to be.

Today is the second to last day of school before I start my external exams. I have spent the last week since saturday stuck in the Photography Classroom until the late hours trying to get my board done. I would have had it done if my original idea hadn't run out of possible paths. So I have put together a whole board in 2 weeks. Its been hell.

Speaking of hell, if some of my readers have been keeping up, I *finally* "came out" last month I think, and there are some good and bad things about it.

The Good

The Bad

I have been constantly abused both verbally and physically (in a minor sense). The abuse is a constant wave, never ceasing and if your not careful, easily drownable in.
Everywhere I go I hear the constant snide comments of "fag, faggot, cocksucker" etc. And once or twice whilt I'm getting things out of my locker, iv been shoved quite hard into the metal of the locker. One time they actually left a huge bruise on my shoulder. It looked like I slammed into a pole or something.

Im hating it soo much, sometimes I wish I never came out and just stayed a closet case. Maybe that way I wouldn't be too different.

Last night had to have been the most bizzare I have experienced at work. I was just finishing up in Kitchen when I had to put my mop down and serve a customer who was clearly a little under influence. First of all he asked if we had any napkins, so I directed him to the Hot Food Cabinet where they are. He then demanded I get them for him because it apparently could be seen as stealing. I mean, they are there for customer use.

On a lighter note, I got a Birthday present from my Aunt Megan. It was a book called "MYSECRET, a PostSecret book" which is filled with personal and deeply intimate messages from Teens and Early 20's that reveal their most secret secrets.

There are some really thought-provoking secrets and some that just make you think of all the intolerance there is in this age.

Back to the Grind

Well the holdays finished a few weeks ago which means it's back to the daily grind of school and revision for exams. *sighs*. Last Week it was the annual Motu Challenge in which Dad and Ms Vellenoweth both competed, as individuals i might add. The day after that i legally became and adult, yes, I celebrated my 18th Birthday with a family dinner, minus my brother, who is at Uni. However we are going to hold a combined celebration seeing as he had his 21st earlier this month.

And as always the dreaded end-of-year NCEA exams creep closer and closer.

On a lighter note, I got accepted into the Student Accomodation at SIT and my Course Application has been partially processed seeing as the course doesnt actually start until Feb. I was ever so keen that I sent my application in really early.

At the moment I am currently obsessed with the music from "The Lion King" so accompanying this post is the video clip for "The Circle of Life" which if you read into my post seems quite applicable.

Discrimination and Fear

This post must be read with an open mind and no pre judgements. Also be aware that I wrote this from my point-of-view!

In the media and in our own lives we see gay mean, and a good majority of high school teens, being beaten to a pulp or removed from society because some people with extraordinary high *morals* can't adjust to the fact that someone (either male or female) can be happy and content and in love with a member of the same sex.

When was the last time you heard about a lesbian couple being the victim of a hate crime here in New Zealand? This brings on an interesting question. "Why is it that gay women are more socially accepted than gay men?" Is it because the "macho" men of this nation like "getting off" on 2 ladies being intimate.

The gay and bi males of this age seem to afraid to find the key to the closet because of the negative connotations and abuse that will follow. I quote an article from last months girly magazine (i forget which one)

"When we go out on public transport we cover our hands with a jumper just so we can hold them. Its stupid that we can't walk down the street and show affection like a straight couple"

For some reason the general public and some *conservative* groups find 2 men holding hands and being affectionate in public something sick and evil, yet 2 females doing the same thing is accepted like a straight couple.

What sort of equal society do we live in if a gay couple (male or female) can't be or won't be accepted and treated like s*** or percieved as disgusting and wrong. Aren't we meant to be, in this age, the free and accepting people we are percieved to be?

If anyone flames me for this post, they will be ignored

Updating for the first time in months

It has been a long time since I last updated my blog.

It is the end of the first week of the school holidays and I am *meant* to be at Outward Bound but they sent me back due to medical reasons. We were halfway through a 2 day hike when I got enormous back pain and had to be evacuated. It felt like my spine was about to leave my body.

So i got flown back to the bay two days later. Its been nothing but solid work since I got back. I've actually been back at Caltex for about 2 days filling in for Melissa, darn flu.

Youth Parliament Run-Down

I have received a comment asking me to write a run-down on the Youth Parliament Experience. It was an amazing experience, and I can admit that I have been bitten by the Politics bug. It gave me a very real insight into the workings of Parliament and also a chance to meet real politicians and “pick their brains”. I met Phil Goff, Helen Clark and Michael Cullen and Harry Duynhoven. I was also surprised to see so many youth with very strong political affiliations, this coming from a very staunch Labour family member.

Every youth MP had a seat on one of the major Select Committes, I had a seat on the Maori Affairs Select Committee where we debated ways to retain students in Upper Secondary School, after hearing submissions from the Ministry of Education, The New Zealand Treasury, Te Puni Kokiri (TPK) and YouthLAW we presented a report to the House.

A few members took part in Question Time where we were able to ask questions of Ministers, a few, myself included, took part in the General Debate where we were allowed the opportunity to talk or rant about a topic of our choice. NCEA was my choice. Finally the remainder of the students took part in the Legislative Debate where they debated a bill on climate change which in essence stated that “All house-holds should open a carbon account to record their carbon emissions and receive tax credits. I abstained my vote because I heard very convincing arguments from both sides and decided to stay with my gut.

If I ever had the opportunity to do it all over again, I would drop everything and do it.

Nuclear Not The Answer

Recently I attended the 2007 Youth Parliament and one of the topics we debated was how to reduce our carbon and ecological footprint.

A fellow MP bought up the subject of Nuclear Power and its pros compared to Sustainable Energy. At his insistence that Nuclear was a viable option for New Zealand to pursue, I was struck by a sudden thought: Nuclear Power may be efficient and slightly cleaner than the Sustainable Energy New Zealand craves, however, the construction of one of these ticking time bombs would consume and utilise vast amounts of fossil fuels, which in turn would release a huge amount of Carbon and GHG’s* into our already vulnerable atmosphere.

Then of course there is the high risk of a reactor meltdown similar to Chernobyl. I realise Chernobyl was 20 years ago but all it takes is a minor “cock-up” or human error for the whole thing to blow up (quite literally) in our faces.

How about transporting and dumping the toxic byproduct? As I write this there are ships forever sailing loaded with Nuclear Waste because no country will allow this waste into their ports. Of course all this waste will most likely be dumped into the waters of the pacific: the popular choice for Nuclear Testing – particularly Mururoa, the location of the controversial French Tests.

New Zealand is still obligated to ratify the Kyoto Protocol in order to cut down on our Carbon and GHG* emissions. This is an admirable goal and we as a nation have the potential to achieve this goal and be a world leader in the attempt to reduce our ecological impact. However I do not believe Nuclear Power is the remedy.

Are we not Aotearoa: Land of the Long White Cloud? Perhaps Aotearoa: Land of the Long Toxic Black Cloud is more befitting.

Is that really the image we want for New Zealand? Is that the image we want for our children? We should be preserving our Clean, Green image for the next generation of New Zealanders.
It’s not yet too late to save our planet from choking in our pollution. So why do we keep delaying? Why do we keep shifting the blame onto others? If everyone did their part – no matter how small – we would be well on our way to becoming a world leader in reducing our Carbon Emissions and Ecological footprint. These could include investing in energy efficient bulbs and using bicycles and public transport.

As the saying goes “One step, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction!”

So let us all make that one step.

50'th Celebration

Last night was the celebration for mum's 50th Birthday. It was an awesome night of hanging out and listening to Pete and His band. I will post some photos when I get them uploaded to flickr.
Dad then cooked bacon for breakfast after he and I packed up the tables and chairs. I then had to go to work at 3 - so overall it was a good night. Met "Barkus" Tracey's new dog and also Eryn and his family along with Pete, Lea, Kurt, Hine and the usual crowd.

Last Saturday myself and Juanita drove to Tauranga to see the Regional Finals of the Smokefreerockquest. The first band had an electric cello, it was so awesom. But also our school band RKanoid performed. A truly excellent performance. I guess it sounds better on Industrial Grade equipment.

"MPs are planning to change the way cameras are allowed to report on events in Parliament.

The rules will be loosened to allow wider, more extensive shots of the house – but journalists will not be able to satirise, ridicule or denigrate MPs.

Whilst on the topic of Youth Parliament, in the latest information pack, i discovered that I, along with fellow MP Mania, have a seat on the Maori Affairs Select Committee where we will be debating one of the 10 topics voted. I also got my accomodation details i.e Billets and such.

Theres not much time left to go before we go to Wellington. I honestly can't wait. I am hoping that I could get time off work for an informal lunch to meet fellow Youth MPs and proper MPs.

I missed out a day of recovery to attend the Stage Challenge Yesterday. It was a neat day. I designed the lighting plan for our performance on the bus ride over so it was a little hurried, but I think it worked really well which was a plus. Then the lighting desk and back up discs crashed so we had to replot all our lights back in. I really enjoyed our performance, but today I am off from school to finally get better from the flu. I will upload some photos to flickr later

Today after interval, I met Moana Mackey, the MP I will be representing at the 2007 Youth Parliament. We sat down and had a talk about what would be happening. What has happened at past Youth Parliaments and she even told me the topics that would be discussed. After a candid photo shoot it was time for her to leave. It was extremely awesome to meet her.

Today I felt ok in the morning, but by second period, I was shivering. I had 3 layers of clothes on. So after a quick trip down to the pharmacy I came home and settled down. The medication I bought made me a bit drowsy...so a nap was in order. I'm still not feeling all that great.

Last night I had a killer sore throat, you know, one of those ones that hurts when you swallow, cough, sneeze, talk. It's very unpleasent. On the lighter side, the Royal New Zealand Navy Band performed at our school. They are extremely talented and excellent performers. Also we had a SADD meeting to organise the workshop we will be attending. Only four members of my committee turned up. Oh well, at least I know who the faithful ones are.

It was an emotional time, especially for mum.
She was buried next to the Rabbit and another of our cats.

Midnight (our other cat) is feeling the loss of her sister and best mate

Yesterday, Mum, Lucy and I set off for Hamilton to see Thomas and give him a "care package". We had great burgers from Burger Fuel. They were enormous and well made. I apologise for the complete lack, of updates.

I recently had a set of follow-up xrays, because my back was hurting so bad.
I think that the Doctor has my xrays now.

Dad recently did a bike ride called the Odyssey which can be found on his blog.

One of the best news, the Youth Minimum wage went up finally, so I am earning more per hour.

I made a change at work with my position, I now float between Forecourt (pumping gas) and Kitchen (making burgers and fries). I thoroughly enjoy the Kitchen.

Wednesday truly felt like winter, it was cold all day, and it rained on this day of celebration. Grandad turned 75, so we celebrated by taking him out to dinner at our local Masonic Hotel. The torrent of water and mud which burst out of the hot crater lake atop Mt Ruapehu on the North Island's volcanic plateau today could have been far worse, say authorities.

A seven-metre high soft rock and ash dam that had penned the lake since the mountain erupted violently in 1995 finally gave way late this morning.

The escaping water gouged out rocks and earth and other debris carrying them down the mountain in the classic mudflow know as a lahar.

Major, Major, major Update

It's that time. A apologise most sincerely for the no activity. There is no excuse.
Well here goes. Last Saturday, myself, a couple of teachers and a few students from my english class travelled to Whakatane to watch the Shakespeare in the Park - Well, all five minutes of it. Heavy rain caused a cancellation. That was a little disappointing, however all was not lost, we were able a little time shopping before it. All of us got absolutely drenched, luckily the Warehouse was still open, where I bought a top to wear whilst I soaked my legs in damp jeans. Upon arrival back in Opotiki, I stopped in at work and got into a change of clothes I had in there.
Today at assembly I got my "Itiaki" badge. I was so excited, I am now part of the elite group of students that assists students and teachers in using the ICT programs on the school network. At the moment we are learning how to use Macromedia Dreamweaver. Its a really neat program. Now its back into the hard grind of School Work, but on the lighter side, Tomorrow I am attempting to get my Full Drivers License in Whakatane. I am a little nervous about it, so today on my way home, I practised talking to myself for identifying hazards and responding to them. I also helped Dad pick out a new Cellphone for Work. I think he is pleased by my decision.

Major Updates

It has been a huge while since I have updated. Last saturday I went on a music trip to Whakatane to watch the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. It was absolutely amazing to see the national orchestra playing live. And on Wednesday we had our annual school athletics day, and prior to that we had our swimming sports. They were great days. Got sunburnt on both of them even though I put sunscreen on. Its not fair.

Well, I'm back at school now. The school year officially started today. I am now the only person in my Year 13 Music Class which means first prize is mine

I loved today, I had Music, Photography, two periods of study, one of which involved teaching Junior Students how to log on to the computers, use the internet, and use learning resources. Never before have I seen such a badly behaved class. But it's not up to me to complain is it?

I'm slacking a bit with my medical stuff. I need to make a physio appointment, its been ages since i've been. I also need to finish my application for a Full Drivers License, so I can finally drive myself and others without needing a fully licensed driver.
